Learning Swedish Beyond the Classroom

Are you an English speaker living in Sweden? I would love to talk to you about your experiences learning Swedish. 

Researcher: 

My name is Kim Kraft. I am an Affiliate Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of Washington’s Department of Scandinavian Studies in Seattle, and a doctoral student at the University of Basque Country in Spain. I will be a visiting researcher at Lund University next year, with support from the American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) Fellowship.

Objectives:

From September 2025 to June 2026, I hope to interview English speakers living in Sweden to learn about their experiences trying to learn Swedish. My goals are to:

• Identify strategies and resources that learners find useful while trying to learn Swedish outside of the classroom while living in Sweden.
• Gain insight into how an immersive environment provides support (or not) for adults trying to learn Swedish independently.
• Develop practical guidelines for lifelong learners and language educators to enhance out-of-class language learning.

Participant Profile

I am looking for volunteer participants who are:

• Advanced English language speakers (interviews will be in English)
• Any level of Swedish (beginner to advanced)
• Age 20+ 
• Living in Sweden (temporariily or long-term)
• Have a goal of learning (at least some) Swedish 
• Not enrolled in for-credit Swedish language classes 
• Willing to participate in four (4) one-hour interviews from Sept. 2025 and May 2026

Your participation will contribute to research that may improve Swedish language education, particularly for learners in similar situations. There is no monetary compensation for participation, but I hope that, by participating, you will become aware of your own strengths and available resources as a lifelong language learner.
