I am a PhD student at the University of the Basque Country, Spain. My research focus is language learning beyond the classroom (LLBC). With support from a fellowship from the American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF), I was a visiting researcher at Lund University for the 2025-2026 academic year. Over the course of eight months, I conducted semi-structured interviews (every three months) with ten English-speaking adults who are living in Sweden and trying to learn Swedish.
Taking an ecological approach to language learning and using a framework fo self-determination theory (SDT), this study focuses on the interaction of adult participants with thier language learning environment to improve their Swedish language skills outside of a traditional classroom setting and without the guidance of formal instruction.
Using qualitative longitidunial (QL) methodology, as well as thematic analysis (TA) and narrative inquiry (NI) methods, this study seeks to better understand how participants' language learning environment supports (or does not support) their need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
The findings of this study will be used to develop practical recommendations for Swedish
language education (for language programs, teachers, and learners) that promotes independent learning and addresses the specific challenges faced by adult learners. Ultimately, the study aims to improve the overall experience for language learners by offering new insights into the complexities and rewards of self-directed language learning.
